The New River Gorge Nation River is rich in cultural and natural history and offers an abundance of scenic and recreational opportunities. The Gauley River National Recreation Area, 25 miles of free-flowing Gauley River and six miles of the Meadow River, pass through scenic gorges and valleys containing a wide variety of social and environmental features.
New River Gorge National River
Size: 72,189 acres
Location: The New River Gorge National River includes 53 miles of the New River between the towns of Hinton and Fayetteville in southern West Virginia.
Description: A rugged whitewater river flowing northward through deep canyons, the New is among the oldest rivers on the continent. The free-flowing river falls 750 feet in 50 miles from Bluestone Dam to Gauley Bridge, creating one of the finest whitewater rivers in the eastern United States. It is abundant in natural, scenic, historic, and recreational features.
Activities Available: Whitewater rafting, camping (primitive), hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, swimming, boating, kayaking, fishing, hunting, and climbing. ACE Adventure Resort Leads guided trips for many of these activities
Gauley River National Recreation Area
Size: 26,607 acres
Location: Gauley River National Recreation Area is located off US 19 between Summersville and Fayetteville, West Virginia.
Description: The 25 miles of free-flowing Gauley River and 6 miles of the Meadow River pass through scenic gorges and valleys containing a wide variety of natural and cultural features. The Gauley River contains several Class V+ rapids, making it one of the most adventurous whitewater boating rivers in the eastern United States. During Fall Gauley Season in September and October, the 12 miles of the Upper Gauley are considered the 8th best run in the world.
Activities Available: Thousands of whitewater enthusiasts come to the Gauley every fall season, to paddle what is considered by many to be the one of the best whitewater rivers in the country. Other activities include camping, hiking, and fishing. ACE Adventure Resort leads guided trips for many of the activities mentioned above. Plus the added bonus of the outstanding lunch site at the 14ft waterfall called Sweets Falls.
